tvr 350i convertible reviews - snooper s5
John: Norwich

Car: TVR 350i Convertible

Reason for purchasing a snooper:
Reasonably obvious?

Date: 7th May 2002

Just think of the possibilities if only you knew where the Speed Traps were!
Like any upstanding member of the community (well I like to think so), I have the greatest of respect for the Law. Also, like any young(ish) male driver, I do nothing but look at my Speedometer to make sure I do not exceed the speed limit; of course I never Speed! :) But on those rare occasions when my mind may have wondered and my speed might have increased a little, the Snooper perks up with little chirrups to let me know there's danger ahead! I have had my Snooper for a couple of months now and drive with it all the time. Now I have ample warning to check my speedo to make sure I'm not speeding. Which of course I would not have been doing, but if I had been, I would have had chance to adjust my speed.

Save your license and your money
My car happens to be very noisy, and very low. Because this feels faster anyway, amazingly I actually find I'm driving around the legal limit. However, like most people, when I get behind the wheel of a modern, refined and above all quiet car, I find it so easy to exceed the speed limit. With hardly any engine noise and the stereo on, you can just drive to the limit of the road and conditions. There's nothing to remind you how fast you're going except looking at the speedo. Which if you're driving fast you're unlikely to do, because you're concentrating. The Snooper doesn't tell you that you're speeding, but it does alert you to the presence of Radar and Laser devices which can tell the Police how fast you're going. If you find yourself going at say, 67mph in a 60mph zone, even though it might feel and be totally safe to do so, and you drive past a working camera, you're knicked! If you drop your speed by 4 or 5 mph, you will appreciate the great benefits for your license and your wallet!

Improve your awareness
There are also big safety implications too, and this is probably the biggest reason for owning a Snooper. Gatsos, or Speed Cameras are often placed at the scenes of Accident Blackspots. If you can be alerted to potentially dangerous road conditions and have time to prepare, a Snooper could help to prevent you from having a very bad day! Shouldn't everyone have one?

Few false alerts
Unlike many Radar detectors the Snooper does not usually go off of at cameras that are not focused on you! However, if it does it is not that annoying and you can always change the sound settings or mute it. The Snooper can go off a bit in town centres, because there are lots of cameras, but at least you get to know where all the CCTV cameras are so that you can avoid doing something silly in front of them when you've had one too many and you think no-one's looking! :)

One of the things that fascinates me is the number of speed cameras that are actually turned off! This is because the Snooper will only pick up on an active camera because it looks for Infrared signals.

Tractors
Strangely, it also seems to let me know when tractors are near too. I don't know if this is a bug or if tractors are fitted with Radar, although I suspect the latter is unlikely. However, as I live in Norfolk this is no bad thing, except that in a TVR you usually encounter them on main roads. This is a bad thing!

Conclusion
Just for the safety implications it's got to be worth the money on it's own. It really does help you drive with renewed confidence!

1. The Snooper sits on your dashboard or sticks to your windscreen, without ruining the beautiful looks of your car. The power comes from the lighter socket. Could this be any easier to fit?
2. The Snooper slides into a suction cup on the screen for easy removal when you leave the car. Although the price is an absolute bargain, I wouldn't want to leave my Snooper on display. So it comes with me, in my pocket in it's handy little pouch.
3. Three idiot proof buttons, should you need them. The first adjusts the brightness of the display, the second adjusts the sound and the third selects the mode. Simple.
4. If I was a better photographer you would be able to see the digital display. It can be dimmed for night time driving, which is a good thing because it's like Las Vegas when it finds something! :)

£295 (plus the vat) has got to be cheaper than more points on my licence! I get to places quicker too! :)
